Mohamed Sami Retires from TV, Studies Abroad
Renowned Egyptian director Mohamed Sami recently shared a surprising update via his Facebook account, announcing his retirement from directing television dramas. The acclaimed filmmaker revealed that he will be stepping away from the industry to pursue a personal passion, embarking on a two-year journey abroad to study a field close to his heart.
In his heartfelt post, Sami bid farewell to TV drama, stating, “Goodbye, television drama. This year marks the end of my TV works, as I say farewell to series after a 15-year journey.” Reflecting on his career, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to entertain Arab audiences. “I gave everything I could to bring joy to the Arab public,” he wrote. “Thanks to God, I achieved success with many stars, production companies, and channels—all of which played a significant role in my journey.”
Sami credited his accomplishments to divine support and the unwavering encouragement from his fans. “The audience always motivated me, whether through their feedback or votes for awards. Any success I’ve had is thanks to God and the people,” he added. He also hinted that those close to him were aware of his decision to retire from TV directing for some time, as he had been fulfilling prior commitments. His final project, completed in 2025, marks the end of this chapter.

A Decision Driven by Passion and Growth

The director explained that he felt he had reached his creative limit in television. “I don’t have anything more to offer in this medium,” he admitted. “I’m worried about the audience growing tired of my style or falling into the trap of repetition and predictability, which could lead to boredom.” He emphasized that only God can sustain permanence, signaling his readiness for a new challenge.
Sami expressed satisfaction with his last two projects, Ish Ish and Sayyed El Nas, which achieved success he’s proud of. “Every day, Egypt—my great country—produces new, talented, and educated creators who can outshine those before them,” he said optimistically. “We’ll keep delivering Egyptian works that unite Arab audiences.”

Gratitude and a New Beginning

In his message, Sami thanked everyone who supported him throughout his career. “I’m grateful to every colleague whose competition pushed me to excel,” he noted. He also issued an apology for any scenes in his works that didn’t resonate with viewers, adding, “Artists always experiment—art is madness, as they say.”
Looking ahead, Sami asked for well-wishes as he prepares to travel abroad for two years to study something he’s long dreamed of learning. “I kept postponing it until I realized I’m getting older and don’t want life to pass me by without pursuing this passion,” he shared. He believes anyone can choose to pause something they love to explore another passion, provided they have a supportive “family” to back their decision.
“I wish all my colleagues the best. I love you all and thank you for years of beautiful competition that built our names,” he concluded. “I hope for success in this new step.”
