Samer Al Masri Critiques Syrian Drama Standards
Renowned Syrian actor Samer Al Masri recently voiced strong disapproval of certain scenes in Syrian dramas, slamming them for including “crude language and cheap gags.” Currently starring in two Ramadan 2025 series—one historical, one contemporary—he urged fellow artists, producers, and writers to uphold a “standard of decency in art” and avoid content that tarnishes Syrian drama’s reputation.

“Pandering for Trends” Sparks Sharp Criticism

Samer didn’t mince words, accusing some drama creators of resorting to vulgarity for “cheap laughs” or to “chase trends.” He argued that such scenes don’t enhance the work but degrade Syrian drama, long celebrated for respecting Arab viewers’ intelligence and taste.

Bold Scenes Need a Purpose

While not entirely against bold content, Samer stressed the need for a “dramatic justification.” He explained, “If a bold scene has a clear purpose, we’ll enjoy it. It adds value when it fits the story, not when it’s forced.”

Respecting Viewers’ Minds

In his closing plea, Samer called on Syrian drama makers to honor their audience’s intellect and elevate public taste. He believes the industry can deliver successful, high-quality works without relying on crude or tasteless elements.

Dual Roles in Muawiya and Under the Ground

This Ramadan, Samer showcases his versatility in two distinct series. In Muawiya, he portrays the historical figure Umar ibn Al-Khattab, while in Under the Ground: Hot Season, he plays “Ahmed.” These roles highlight his acting prowess and commitment to meaningful storytelling.
